In a decade of public service as a state senator and currently as Member of Congress, 18th District, Texas, she has made unique contributions to many facets of the life of not only her native state, but of the entire nation. The exhaustive research and scholarly preparation that she brings to bear in the decision-making process is a model for her profession. To a nation yearning for leadership, she is a commanding example of a leader of great quality, such that the high esteem in which she is held transcends party and ideological lines. She engenders respect for her intellect, her eloquence, her forcefulness, her political sense, and above all, for her dedication to principles. In recognition of her distinction as a courageous public servant and because of the promise of achievements to follow, Southern Methodist University is proud to confer upon her the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
